A Mangala Swoon Kyway

By Dr Maung Maung Nyo

Three days after Christmas Eve 2009

We have to race against time

To bathe to dress up and try

To reach the Swoon Waing

From Sanchoung to Bahan

We ride the fastest car with alarm!

( L to R: U Thein Kyaw, Daw Mya Mya Win, Dr NOM, Dr MMN, Aung, Ei

U John Gyi, Anna aka Dr Khin Khin Kyaut)

We do reach Yaw monastery in time

In fact we are the first sign

In as the first visitors in the morning

Even the monks and novices are calling

Out each other for their daily messing

We are satisfied for our daughter’s wedding.

Guests arrive one by one or in group

In cars and taxis or some on foot

Wearing Burmese dresses that suit

The weather, occasion and mood

Even U John Gyi dons the Type Pon

He is young and handsome to look on.

Bride and groom invite the elders

To the auditorium to gather

For Yaw Sayadaw’s speech

On Mangala Swoon and seek

Blessings in this life and next for ever

All can enjoy success luxury and leisure.

He preaches for about an hour

Guests have to wait and suffer

From nine to eleven AM without food

They just have to chat and stoop

When we emerge from the “mass”

All shout smile and swiftly greet us.

The food is served hot

It comes direct from the pot

Hot steaming and smelling spices

Guests and hosts share it nice

Fish chicken salads pork and pea

Every one has a marvelous meal.

The bride and groom greet every one

They are in happy mood and warm

They smile they speak and they pose

For photo with every guest close

Though most are their parents’ mates

They feel they have come of age.

(Profssor Hla Yee Yee Saying Goodbye to U Bo Kyin, Bride's Uncle)

Guests leave at about twelve noon

Some stay late as it seems so soon

They sit and gossip for the old time

Brigadier Mya Thein Han is so fine

Chatting with Kyaw Shein and U Bo Kyin

He poses with me, Shwe Shwe and Sein Tin.

Many doctors also grace the occasion

Ba Shwe, Anna and Thein Nyunt all grin

The last is poet Nyunt Way Katha

It is graced by a poem by Dagon Taryar.

We all are happy when the last guest left

Bride, groom and four parents have to test

The photographers for different poses and scenes

We are like children playing on the green

We ask photos to be taken here and there

We enjoy the occasion as in a fun fair.

(Bride and Groom Sitting in Front Of the Yaw Sayadaw)

Aung and Ei have fed the monks with morning meal

They also gave lunch to their friends for all to see

Parents of both sides enjoy it and call it a good deed

May they be united for ever as they seek

Love loyalty and devotion until death

Let’s wish them success in this aspect.
