A Day to Remember for Remorse!

Dr Maung Maung Nyo

I still remember today
Our march on the National Day
"Amyotha Nayt Doh Nayt, Doh Nayt"
(National Day, our day, our day!)
We shouted aloud with utmost faith
Students must strive for the nation
Nation must nurture the new generation.

(Stone Slab Recording First Students' Strike of 1920)

Our teacher told us how it began
Rangoon Uni students as a man
Demanded by strike the Brits to mend
University Act to act as helping hand
For the poor students also to learn
University must show concern.

(Judson's College was One Constituent of the RU in 1920)

Rangoon Uni became the refuge of students
Who boycotted for equality and advancements
Including those aiming for independence
Maung Nu, Aung San, Thein Pe and Ba Hein
They sacrificed their lives and love to attain
Liberty and democracy for the nation
No body should forget their contribution.

(Convocation Hall of the RU, Rangoon University)

Now that time has taken a toll
How many remember it for a poll
Those inside are prevented to partake
Expatriates are mute to celebrate
Being apolitical and no longer related
“The National Day” is passed relegated
Pain in my heart and soul
Shame on their part and ego!

(Rangoon University Students Union,RUSU, Building)
