My Role Model Professor Dr Shwe Tin

I knew U Shwe Tin since third year
It was in Mandalay when we were there
He was a friendly surgeon unlike others
He taught, he joked and looked after us.

Then, he was our teacher at Dufferin
He was now specializing in Ob/Gyn
He had to go for OG membership in London
He was sympathetic to us student locums.

He passed his MRCOG exam with distinction
He now belonged to two big disciplines
He had to head the Ob/Gyn at IM 2
He did it well on par with other institutes.

He was a strong teacher with good will
He taught students to master the skills
He praised, he poked fun or he grilled
But, he made students good in Obs and Gyny.

He encouraged student sports
He headed its committee forth
He also set up a “poor student fund”
We contributed out of our monthly income.

He was liked by both staff and students
He delivered babies for many dependents
Including my sister and many friends
He even did abortion or sterilization to suit them.

He was forward looking
He encouraged such things
As birth control and sex education
He wrote a foreword to my first publication.

He was interested in medical education
He took part or led many instructions
He was like a brother in my undertakings
He always stood by me through thick and thin.
He was religious and moral
He looked at you from wide angle
He never went down to personal
He always saw people to be valuable.

He was jump promoted to DG
He worked hard more than necessary
He organized new FRCS course in the country
He wanted his students to grab that opportunity.

U Shwe Tin was a man of integrity and vision
He set medical education as his mission
Not neglecting patient care and public health
He led specialists’ teams to areas of little wealth.

He worked 18 hours a day those days
I was his general secretary for BMA
We achieved many successes for the association
It was the most active year of medical profession.

U Shwe Tin died in his fifties
It was a great loss to the country
In education, health services and training
We also miss him in sports and sex education.
