Pied Piper of Hamelin

During my high school and university years
I learned some worldly worthy English literature
I came upon a pithy poem taught by my teachers
It was the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the classic reader.
Hamelin town was plagued by a vermin
It’s ubiquitous and uncontrolled by any action
It interrupted all functions like eating and speaking
It destroyed the normal life of all human beings.
No townspeople could conquer or tame
Physicians, politicians and police tried in vain
Even the armed soldiers had to admit in shame
They could not vanquish, hit or tame.
So, the Mayor consulted with town’s councilors
They agreed to award a guilder to the conqueror
Who vanquished or controlled the vermin destroyer
They proclaimed it for all to know and adventure.
Then, came a hero from afar
He was the piped piper or flute player
He wore a cloak of red and yellow diapers
He said he would terminate it altogether.
He took out an ugly pipe from his side
He played his flute to all his delight
Al the rats came out to be on his sides
They followed him closely to be nice.
He took them to the river
They all went down dither
All of them drowned and disappeared
He demanded the prize from the Mayor.
When the Mayor refused to pay
Citing this and that to gain his way
He took out his flute again and played
This time children closely followed his way.

He led them to a mountain not far away
All the children clapping, dancing and singing
He opened a cave in the mountain in his way
He entered it as the children followed his sway.
When the last child was in the cave
The rock door closed behind without a trace
Adult town folks were all amazed and dazed
They just wept wild wave after wave.
There was an ocean on other side of the mountain
But, no trace of children were found on ascertain
What had happened to the children then and how?
No body can say certainly until now!
Some say they were found in Transylvania
They looked different from others in the area.
The Piped Piper was composed by Robert Browning
The king pin in the avant-garde of poetic themes
To give a lesson to keep promise once given
One will reap the award then as it happened
If we smell of some rats in this forum
Who’ll be the piped piper of AMIM in its decorum?
