Obama and John F. Kennedy

Dr Maung Maung Nyo

Obama‘s election as POTUS reminds me
Of the election of John F Kennedy in 1960
He was elected POTUS as Catholic minority
He was young, handsome, intelligent and savvy.

John Kennedy proved to be a charismatic leader
He enchanted America as well as the world
He gave inspirations to conquer new frontiers
He set plans to send Man to the moon sooner.

He was successful in his missions everywhere
Except that fateful Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba
He compensated it by confronting Khrushchev there
Both Ks succeeded in defusing a would-be nuclear war!

He was popular with men and women, young and old,
Beautiful women fell for him like greedy men for gold
He responded to their advances equally as he was bold
He might have shared a beauty with men of Mafia mold.

This led to his downfall as he was assassinated early
He was shot by a lone assassin or many possibly
One bright day in Texas on his motorcade standing
He died instantly falling over his wife’s shoulder slanting.

America wept for him and the world was sad seething
No such man has come forward in USA to stake his vision
Or to replace him as the leader of free world in his missions
Many events since have darkened the image of his nation.

Many “pretenders to the throne” have attempted his exploits
Gary Hart, Jimmy Carter and Edwards as examples to shed light
Bill Clinton mastered Kennedy’s popular appeals in his stride
He was the only one that succeeded as POTUS elected twice.

Now Obama has been elected President of the United States
He also has taken John Kennedy as his role model and image
Caroline and Ted Kennedy extolled him as another John Kennedy
Preempting the efforts of other usurpers to use Kennedy’s legacy
JFK is the only successful Democrat model in USA for electability
I pray Obama succeed without meeting the fate of John F. Kennedy.
